Why Name Your Reading Log?

When you launch Reading Forest, a file called "New Reading Log" opens by default. A reading log is a file that holds multiple books together. Giving it a meaningful name before adding books makes it easier to stay organized as your collection grows.

For example, you could organize by genre like "Computer Science", "Fiction", or "Language Study", or by author like "Haruki Murakami". This way you can quickly find the books you're looking for.

How to Rename

  1. Click the file name at the top of the screen
Click (or tap on mobile) the "New Reading Log" text at the top of the screen to open the rename dialog
  2. Enter a new name
Type your preferred name in the "New file name" field (e.g., "Computer Science", "Fiction"). The .rfnote extension is added automatically
  3. Click "Rename"
Click the "Rename" button to apply the new name

You can also rename from the menu

You can open the same dialog from [File]→[Rename]. For more details, see Rename a File.

Tips for Organizing

There are no strict rules for naming, but here are some useful approaches:

  • By genre — "Fiction", "Technical Books", "Business", etc.
  • By author — "Haruki Murakami", "Stephen King", etc.
  • By purpose — "Language Study", "Exam Prep", "Work References", etc.
  • By year — "2026 Reading Log" to keep annual records

Not just books

Reading Forest can also be used to keep records of movies and music. Create reading logs like "Movie Notes" or "Music I've Listened To" and manage all your intellectual assets in one place.

You can always rename later

You can change the name at any time. Feel free to start with any name and reorganize later. As your collection grows, you can also split files to reorganize.
