How to Split a File

The Free Plan limits up to 20 books per file. If you have a file with 21 or more books registered, you'll need to split it into files with 20 or fewer books each.

When Splitting is Required

  • When downgrading from a paid plan to the free plan
  • When you have a file with 21 or more books registered

Splitting Steps

Step 1: Check Current File

Open the target file from Google Drive (e.g., Reading Records.rfnote) and check how many books are registered.

Step 2: Create New File

  1. Select [File] → [New] from the menu bar
  2. Enter a new file name (e.g., Reading Records_2024.rfnote, Reading Records_Fiction.rfnote)
  3. Click "Save"

Step 3: Move Books (Method A: Save to File)

Use the "Save to file" feature to save selected books as a new file.

  1. Open the original file
  2. Click to select books you want to move (Shift+click for range selection, Ctrl+click for multiple selection)
  3. Click the "Save to file" button
  4. Specify save location and filename, then save
  5. After successful save, click "Delete" to remove from original file

Tip: The delete operation can be undone with "Undo" (Ctrl+Z).

Step 3: Move Books (Method B: Copy & Paste)

Open Reading Forest in two tabs and move books using copy & paste.

  1. Open two tabs in your browser and launch Reading Forest in each
  2. Open the original file in Tab 1
  3. Open a new file (or create new) in Tab 2
  4. In Tab 1, open "Book List" and check the books to move
  5. Click "Cut" button (or Ctrl+X)
  6. In Tab 2, open "Book List" and click "Paste" button (or Ctrl+V)
  7. Save both files

Tip: Using "Copy" keeps the books in the original file, while "Cut" removes them from the original.

Tips for Splitting

  • Split by genre: Fiction, Business, Technical books, etc.
  • Split by year: 2023, 2024, etc.
  • Split by reading status: Finished, Reading, To-read, etc.
  • Create series-specific files: For manga or novel series, create dedicated files (e.g., One Piece.rfnote, Harry Potter.rfnote) to easily manage volume numbers

Step 4: Verify

Confirm that each file has 20 or fewer books.

Additional Info

Even on the Free Plan, you can create and manage multiple files. As long as each file has 20 or fewer books, there's no limit on the number of files.
