Customizing Settings

Customize Reading Forest's behavior to make it work better for you.

Opening Settings

1. Click [File] → [Settings] from the menu (you can also use [View] → [Settings], or press Ctrl+,)
2. Switch between the tabs along the top ([File], [Appearance], [Devices], [Account], [Plan], [Shortcuts], [Goals]) to review and change the options

The [Account] tab is not shown for child accounts. The [Plan] tab is not shown if you take part as a member of a group.

[File] Tab

File Operations

• Enable Bookshelf: Turns on the Bookshelf, which lets you reopen previously opened files with one click (Chrome / Edge only). See Bookshelf for details
• Numbered backup: Before Quick Save (Ctrl+S / toolbar 💾) overwrites a file, keeps the original under a name such as mybook_backup_1.rfnote. See Backup and Restore for details
• Reset Bookshelf Data: If the Bookshelf is not displayed correctly, clears the Bookshelf data kept on this device and starts over (cloud data is not deleted and is fetched again after the reset)

Google Drive

• Connection status: Shows whether you are connected to Google Drive
• [Connect to Google Drive] / [Disconnect]: Connect when you are not connected, or disconnect when you are
• Auto Sync: While connected to Google Drive, saving locally or to Google Drive also syncs to the other location (default: ON). If a file with the same name has different content, a confirmation appears
• Also copy to a folder on this device when saving to Google Drive: When OFF, that device saves to Google Drive only. Use it to stop the write-permission prompt on your phone (per-device setting, default: ON). Pressing [Do not copy on this device] in the prompt shown when saving also turns this option OFF, and you can turn it back ON here. See Auto Sync for details

How Auto Sync Works

• New file — Saving to one location automatically copies it to the other
• Existing file (same content) — Nothing happens
• Existing file (different content) — Shows which is newer and asks you to overwrite, skip, or keep both
• Deleted file — If the file was deleted from one location, a confirmation dialog appears

[Appearance] Tab

• Language: Switch the app's display language (日本語 / English)
• Theme: Choose a color theme. See Themes for details
• Font: Change the font family and font size
• Display Options: Choose what appears on the main screen
  ・Show cover images / Trim cover margins
  ・Show unread, in-progress, completed, and stalled books (stalled = not read for 6+ months)
  ・Show reading records / also show records without memos
  ・Show progress graph / Show reading calendar
  ・Progress filter (show only books within a progress range, e.g. 90%–100%)
  ・Progress bar color palette
• Display Mode: Adapt the interface to how you use it (Simple Reading / Study & Memory / Research & Academic / Media & Entertainment / Easy / Full Features)
• Tooltip: Show hints when you hover over buttons and controls
• Haptic Feedback: On mobile devices, vibrate briefly in response to your actions
• Max image width in memos: The maximum width for images in memos (Small 300px / Medium 500px / Large 800px / No limit)

[Devices] Tab

• Registered Devices: A list of the devices signed in to this account
• Notification Settings: Choose whether to receive an email when someone signs in from a new device

[Account] Tab

• My Data: View the personal information we hold about you
• Change Email / Change Password
• Leave Group: Shown if you take part as a member of a group
• Delete Account

[Plan] Tab

• Current plan / contract details: Check your plan and contract
• Change Plan: Switch between the Free, Personal, and Group plans
• Change group plan size: Change the number of people on a Group plan
• Manage child accounts: Manage the child accounts for which you are registered as the parent or guardian

[Shortcuts] Tab

Shows the list of available keyboard shortcuts. Shortcuts you can use while editing a record are explained in Record Editing Shortcuts.

[Goals] Tab

• Yearly Goal / Monthly Goal: Set a target number of books (works) to finish. When a goal is enabled, a progress bar appears at the top of the main screen
• Review notifications (OS): Get OS notifications for scheduled reviews, at the time slots you choose (morning 7:00, noon 12:00, evening 21:00)
