Please Check Before Downgrading

Free Plan Limitations

The free plan allows only up to 20 books (works) per file, but you can create unlimited files.

  • Files with 20 or fewer books (works): Can be used normally
  • Files with 21 or more books (works): View, split, and delete only (editing and saving disabled)

If your current file has 21 or more books (works), we recommend splitting your books before clicking the downgrade button. (After downgrading, you can still use the paid plan features until the end of the current billing period, so you can split your books then too.)

※ Even on the free plan, you can easily split books by using the "Separate to Another File" feature. Select books → Click "Separate to Another File" → The books are saved to a new file and automatically deleted from the current file. Alternatively, you can use "Save to Another File" to save first, then manually delete.

How to Store Unlimited Books (Works) on the Free Plan

Even on the free plan, you can store unlimited books (works) by splitting them across multiple files.

  • Example: Organize by genre (Fiction.rfnote, Business.rfnote, Technical.rfnote, etc.)
  • Example: Organize by year (2024 Reading.rfnote, 2025 Reading.rfnote, etc.)

How to Split Books (If You Have 21+ Books (Works))

Before downgrading, split your books with 21 or more entries into multiple files. This allows you to continue managing all your books (works) on the free plan.

1 Open Reading Forest

First, log in to Reading Forest and load the file containing the books you want to split.

2 Check Books to Split

Click the checkboxes next to the books you want to split on the main screen.

  • You can select multiple books at once
  • Example: Select only business books to split into a separate file
  • Example: Select only finished books to split into an archive file
  • Make sure to split so each file has 20 or fewer books (works)
3 Calculation Example

Plan your split by ensuring each file will have 20 or fewer books (works).

Example

If you currently have 30 books (works):

  • File A: Keep 20 books (works)
  • File B: Split off 10 books (works)

Or:

  • File A: Keep 15 books (works)
  • File B: Split off 15 books (works)
4 Execute "Separate to Another File"

When you select books, a " Separate to Another File" button appears at the bottom of the screen.

Click this button.

5 Choose New File Name

A dialog will appear to choose the save location and filename.

Give it a descriptive name.

  • Example: "Business Books.rfnote"
  • Example: "2024 Reading.rfnote"
  • Example: "Archive.rfnote"
  • Example: "Finished Books.rfnote"
6 Separation Complete

"Separate to Another File" saves the selected books to a new file and automatically deletes them from the original file.

When separation is complete, a success message appears.

State After Splitting

  • Original file: Selected books are automatically deleted (only remaining books)
  • New file: Contains only the selected books
  • Both files can be edited independently if they have 20 or fewer books (works)

Repeat the split until all files have 20 or fewer books (works).

The split operation can be undone with Ctrl+Z.

7 Save the Original File

After separation is complete, the original file is in an edited state (unsaved changes). Click the " Save" button in the top menu bar to save the changes.

Once the original file has 20 or fewer books (works), you can edit and save on the free plan.

8 Check New File

The new file is saved to the location you selected in Step 5.

If needed, save it to cloud storage like Google Drive.

Google Drive Storage Recommended

The Google Drive save feature is available even on the free plan. Saving multiple files to Google Drive allows access from any device.

Tip

"Separate to Another File" is easier than the traditional two-step [Save to file]→[Delete] approach because it completes both actions at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my past data be deleted after downgrading?

No, it won't be deleted. All your data remains intact. However, if a file has 21 or more books (works), you won't be able to edit or save it (viewing, splitting, and deleting are still possible).

Can I merge split books back together later?

Yes, you can, but the book order may change. However, since the free plan limits files to 20 books (works), we recommend upgrading to a paid plan first before merging.

Can I manage multiple files on the free plan?

Yes, you can. There's no limit on the number of files on the free plan - only a limit of 20 books (works) per file. By splitting into multiple files, you can effectively manage unlimited books (works).

Can I upgrade again after downgrading?

Yes, you can upgrade again at any time. Go to "Plan Management" in the settings screen and select your desired plan to upgrade.

How should I decide which books to split?

We recommend splitting based on criteria like:

What happens if I keep a file with 21+ books (works)?

On the free plan, files with 21 or more books (works) become "read-only". Only these actions are available:

Delete or split books to get to 20 or fewer to enable editing and saving. To add new books (works), you need 19 or fewer.
